Dunya’s a cozy roost in Shaw

Dunya’s a cozy roost in Shaw

First Bite: Mostly Mediterranean, and good if you’re in the neighborhood.

Here's the latest addition to the Shaw restaurant boom: Dunya, a new Mediterranean restaurant at 801 Florida Ave. NW from a former owner of Shaw's Tavern. Named for the Turkish word for "world," the restaurant officially opened its doors Dec. 3. In spring, Dunya plans to open a rooftop patio.

Expect wines from around the world, cocktails named after far-flung destinations (like the Monaco, $13, with Germain-Robin apple brandy, Contreau, and Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur), and local beers on draft. A daily 5 to 7 p.m. happy hour gets you $2 off on beer, cocktails and wines by the glass.

For dinner, starters ($3-$20) include roasted bone marrow, shrimp en papillote and brussels sprouts with chorizo. Main courses ($15-$27) range from a vegetarian couscous tagine to a stout-marinated lamb shank. For dessert, there's panna cotta, pistachio cheesecake and affogato.
