But what the dining room lacks in flair is more than made up for by much of what you get from the kitchen.

I totally agree with the last guy's review of Eat First. I live in Alexandria which has some great Chinese (Ginger Beef, Shanghai Peking, Oriental Star -- All excellent). I used to work off H Street but it had been a while since visiting. My wife and I did research and Eat First came with some strong recs from various sources. Why not?, we said. Wow. I was surprised to find a nearly empty restaurant (Thursday at 6:00 PM) and really average, run of the mill Chinese. Still tasty but absolutely nothing special and no better than hundreds of other places in the Alexandria and D.C. area. I have visited H Street a few more times since and would put New Big Wong and Full Kee above Eat First.
What's so special about this place? It's just generic Chinese food you can get anywhere in America. They do have a Chinese menu, though, which you have to ask for. Also, may next time, I'll try to order one of the specials listed on the wall. I ordered shrimp lo mein, veg. fried rice and steamed dumplings, none of which were very special. Why doesn't anyone run a great Chinese restaurant in Chinatown? That's what the tourists are all after.
