The Buzz: You've probably walked by a million times without glancing inside. It appears basement chic, but the cafe draws such diverse crowds as Secret Service agents and drunk college students after basketball games -- ESPN is always on one of the old TVs. The snappy service is far more polite than the run-of-the-mill diner and the friendly staff treats everyone like regulars.

On Your Plate: Tried-and-true diner basics always hit the spot (chicken fingers and crispy fries from the appetizer menu make a wonderful meal), but the Mediterranean specialties are generally underrated. The authentic kabobs and falafel dishes satisfy when boutique shoppers need a break and bar-hoppers hunger for a late-night meal.

Nice to Know: The outlandish milkshakes are proclaimed the unofficial best in the District. Chocolate concoctions are the most popular, but the vanilla and strawberry also shine. Stop in for shakes and appetizers after a weekend night out -- stay at the bars until closing time and the Cafe will still be open.

Price Points: Almost everything on the menu is under $10, so splurge on the luscious chocolate layer cake for dessert. It's so rich you'll need to share, but you won't want to.
