Not wanting to encounter DuPont circle parking problems I ventured to Hank's in Old Town... My date and I ordered the Oyster Po'Boys..which arrived in a timely fashion, hot and on perfectly seasoned buns...The oystewrs were juicy and tender...The major disappointment was the cole slaw which came with it...it was nothing more than shredded cabbage...I asked and was given whatever mayonnaise type sauce they had to cover it...I'm puzzled...coleslaw is not rocket science..and should always have some mayo included in it...
1" x 1.5" oysters on the half shell at $2.00 ea. 'Oyster Po-Boy' is a split-top hot dog bun with 6 fried shrimp, no 'dressing.' Cole slaw was chopped cabbage, no dressing. At $15 way too pricy. Side of mac and cheese good, but at $6.95 expensive. I'll pass on this one as too hyped. If you want oysters, go to New Orleans. A poor boy would starve with this version of a sandwich.
I have excitedly gone to Hank's twice, and been sadly disapointed. Hank's as many "seafood" places in DC cater to, well frankly people who know nothing about fish and don't really like it. Both times my fish was overcooked, the waitstaff could not tell me where the oyster or fish were from, and the fried clams are nothing like the clams you get in essex, MA, Cape Cod or ME. I'm sorry, but this should be called a Mid-Western style fish place rather than a New England Style. If you want good oysters and well prepared fish go to Old Ebbit or Central, OR pick up a cookbook, head to HMart and cook it at home. Kinkaids does a nice job, but covers everything in sauce, again for people who don't really know or like fish.
Cramped and noisy, but you come for the food. Very good fresh oyster selection and they arrive with their names printed out so you know what to reorder. Poboys, lobster roll, fries, other side dishes were great. No deserts which is a checkbuilding shortcoming. Friendly help. 30-45 minute weekend waits. Great quality and fairly priced.
