I recently ordered a Caipirinha at Jaleo (7th St.) and it did not taste right; it had no flavor. I asked the bartender if he had put soda water in it and he said "no." I asked him what type of cachaca he had used and he told me that they had no cachaca so he used Puerto Rican Rum and most customers don't know the difference. I said, "well the difference is dramatic" and he told me that I must have exceptional taste buds. Give me a break! It wasn't even close, and I am outraged that I was not warned of the substitution, since I would have switched my order to a Margarita. If only Jose knew, I think he would be horrified at the indifference to authenticity. Well, maybe now he does. Fortunately, however, the food is still great.
My son and I were at Jaleo's for dinner before going to a game at the Verizon Center. The food was okay but I don't see what the rave is about! The service was terrible. After waiting for our food, the server put a plate of fried something on our table and walked away before we could ask what it was. It turned out that it was meant for another table. It took way too long for our actual food to arrive. After we ate and got the check, we waited for a good ten minutes before I had to flag down someone down and they ran our card. It was the first time in years that I left a $0 tip! From now on, if we want tapas, we will go to La Tasca, which is only a block away. Better food at a fraction of the price.
DO NOT dine at a rude and disapointing restaurant. The matre de/ women dressed in black aske dus to leave after dropping due to a larger party was inbound after $400.00 on a business dinner...needless to say my client was mortified. The party of six had a net icome of well over $1M in gross revenue and we were disinvited to stay at the bar or restaurant. Again, I was well received at the Inn of Little Washingtion...60 miles away from snibby DC at a far below par restaurant. Extemely disappointed...do not dine at Jaleos unles...rudeness is on your menu.
I love Jose's gin and tonic, espeically with the huevo frito. Jaleo takes the simpliest ingredients and makes them memorable. Service was on the spot!
