Kanpai is named after the Japanese word for "Cheers!" -- an upbeat idea that suits a lot of the food.

Kanpai has a good atmosphere and is one of the cleaner restaurants in the area. However, they cut their sushi slices small. The sushi rolls are thin and tiny.
The sushi is always incredibly fresh and the service is wonderful. I agree that the slices of fish are somewhat smaller than many places, but that's not a bad thing. Just like bigger sandwiches are not necessarily better, and are often harder to eat - it's the same with sushi. The quality has always been top notch (I've eaten there at least 15 times) and the fish to rice ratio is perfect. I've eaten at most of the area top sushi restaurants and this is one of the best!!!
I have eaten sushi at least 80 times, and this is one of the worst I've tried. I work above the place, so thought I'd give it a try. Their price was $1 more than the menu displayed online. The sushi rolls are thin and tiny, and you will still be hungry after eating 3 6pc rolls. Not good.
Three years ago, I would have written a good review for this restaurant. Tonight, however, I feel one star is too many. The carpaccio thin sashimi is overpriced and disappointing. The smelts were awful. The miso soup was more like chicken broth with tofu. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in this area over the years and this was by far the worst.
Kanpai is a hidden gem that is yet to be discovered by the masses. It's quiet and modern and there is even a garden and outdoor eating area. A small pond full of fish and koi is also delightful to watch. I was introduced to STTR and Chesapeake roll by the owners and have been in love ever since. I've tried to order at other places and they had no idea what it was because it can only be found at Kanpai. I will never stray again. Their teriyaki dishes are delicious and everything is served with care. You have to meet the owners... they're a delight. In spirit of honesty, there is a lack of parking spaces, but not enough of a distraction to keep me from this gem of a restaurant. Remember STTR... can't go wrong. Kanpai!
Not only is the food fresh and delicious, but the staff is energetic and helpful as well. I love to sit at the bar where the sushi chef serves up little dishes for me to sample (on the house). He is very friendly and generous, and of course a great chef!
