I wish the weather would have held up so that we could have walked the grounds... they are beautiful. What a wondeful place to have an outdoor wedding... food was exactly what I expected... good!
We had the most wonderful dinner at Mrs K's last night. We chose from the $33 3 course dinner menu as well as from the regular menu and the value priced wine (bottles) list. Our meal was supurb. There was nothing we would have changed. Service was fantastic. Consider Mrs. K's for your next lunch/dinner out.
The menu at the Toll House has never disappointed me. I have always felt safe bringing vegetarians along to meals. I have been dining with them for years. Recently, the Wine Press seems to have become the community hot spot for Silver Spring. On most nights, you have to get there early to get a seat at the bar for happy hour. If that is not possible, they have been more than happy to treat my girlfriends and I with the same offerings as the bar at any table in the house. On my last visit, I tried seven different tastes(half pours) of wine. My favorite was a Robert Young Chard. I learned more about the wine from the staff than I can remember, but I do know that I will be returning soon with my friends.
Mrs. K's happy hour has revitalized my interest to dine in Silver Spring. I didn't think it was possible for a restaurant to have a wine list which is versatile, vast and still affordable. My friends had been telling me how nice their wine cellar was, so I decided to check it out for myself. This is a radical transformation for what I had considered to be a stagnant community standard. If you are a wine enthusiast, like myself, stop by for a drink. If you have an appetite, try the food which has gained the reputation of being the best. I have tried for years, but still can't make a crab cake at home to match.
If you are want to eat good food, stay away from this restaurant. The interior is dated and was not remodeled for at least 20 years. The dinner menu is varied but our selections were tasteless. The salad was swimming in a sour dressing, the spinach soup was cold and tasteless, the grilled polenta tasted like wet cardboard mixed with some unidentifiable fibers and words cannot describe the fish dish. The wine list is extensive and includes some interesting selections.
The setting and service were very pleasant, but the food was very disappointing. The appetizers--lamb patties and a crab cake--were very enjoyable. The crab cake was very good with almost no filling, and the lamb was very tender and well prepared. My rib eye, though a perfect medium rare, was nearly flavorless and came with a very large hunk of butter that melted and soaked all of the food on my plate. The lamb chops were tasty--but not worth being one of their signature dishes. The corn was so mushy it should not have been plated.
