Jose Andres hits the street with Pepe

By Justin Rude
March 5, 2012

The city’s newest member of the food truck fleet, Pepe, hits the streets tomorrow and comes with a bit more pedigree than your typical lunch wagon: D.C. kitchen superstar Jose Andres is the man behind Pepe’s menu of Spanish accented sandwiches. Fans of Jaleo will be familiar with some of what Pepe has to offer. Bocadillos like the serrano ham and manchego and the Escalivada — roasted eggplant, red peppers, sweet onions, spinach and mojo rojo — have appeared on the menu at Andres’s flagship.

“I think Jaleo has a pretty great sandwich menu,” he told me at a press preview earlier today, “but, maybe because of the tapas concept, no one seems to talk about them. This is a way to get them to more people.”

Prices at Pepe generally range from $8-$11 for sandwiches, though you can drop $14 on the Pepito de Ternera, a thin, crusty baguette stuffed with seared beef tenderloin, caramelized onion, pepper confit and blue cheese; or try $20 for the Pepito de Iberico, which is seared Iberico pork and Serrano ham with roasted green peppers, carmelized onions and aioli. For dessert, pick up Andres’s take on a classic ice cream sandwich, made of long, thin, moist chocolate cookies filled with hazelnut ice cream, for $5.

Prices are higher than what one would expect for typical food truck fare. But as the Red Hook Lobster Truck has shown, D.C. street food fans aren’t afraid to part with bigger bills for something special.

Follow Pepe on Twitter to find out when it will be landing near you.
