Ate at Ray’s Too, the overflow room a couple of doors down, and had the Big Devil (10 oz.) with foie gras and mushrooms sautéed in cognac as toppings. Accompanied with a roasted garlic paste that I used like mustard. Although expensive at $20, the burger was tasty and flavorful. Worth trekking to Ray’s because you aren’t going to get a burger like that at most places. My companion, however, had a more standard burger. Found her burger to be just ordinary. She also found her tater tots to be run-of-the-mill. So unless you are going to partake of the more unusual fare, I would not recommend travelling further to Ray’s than you would to a Five Guys.
Food is wonderful for the price. Although you can expect to get a little messy since the burgers are so big your arms get tired from holding it!!! Also remember to tell them exactly how well done you want your burger if you say RARE it will be RARE!!!
Ray's has great burgers... hands down, but the best thing about is the FREE - yes, I say FREE - corkage policy. If you're a wino like me but don't always want to go to an expensive or upscale place that has a BYO policy, or if you want to feel Miles at the end of Sideways drinking a '61 Cheval Blanc in a crappy burger joint, bring a bottle of great wine and enjoy a burger. It's a great experience. I wrote about it here: http://www.thefreewineblog.com/2011/12/whats-greatest-thing-in-world.html
I have visited Ray's since they opened and yesterday my experience was dreadful along with three others. The hamburger was overcooked, dried out, the bread was not fresh. The overall quality was poor for all four of us. We will not go back and the word will spread.
My boyfriend & I both ordered our burgers medium but got medium rare. I ate it anyway, though that color of pink in my meat is a little disquieting to me. The quality of everything was good, but altogether, the au poivre burger I had with blue cheese, grilled onions, & mushrooms was too salty. Also, my boyfriend's order was off. Come early. We could barely hear each other by 7 pm on a weeknight. And BRING CASH!
