The Penn Quarter shop pairs the diminutive treats with decadent hot chocolate.

Was visiting from San Antonio and stumbled on this bakery on our last night in DC. Loved these cupcakes, although a little pricey! Can't wait to go back.
I am a super huge sweet freak. And I try sweets everywhere I go (I travel alot), and I would say don't waste your time on this place.
Some of the pricey cupcakes in DC are trendier than they are yummy (*cough,* Cake Love), but Red Velvet is actually worth it (though I admit I cringe at the cost). The cake is moist and delicious and the frosting is terrific as well. They are tiny, so therefore also portion control. I've had the red velvet and devil's food, both delicious.
I bought cupcakes here and admittedly, i didn't eat them since i was giving them to friends but i can't believe they could sell a dozen for $36 if they were bad. Nice shop and staff.
I bought 3 cupcakes to see how they measured up to my DC cupcake favorites: 1. G-town 2. baked and Wired (distant)3. Hello Cupcake. I have rarely met a cupcake I didnt like, but these were atrocious. the yellow birthday cake had a strong, artificial coconut flavor and icing with an almost pudding-like consistency. the devil's food had a bitter, burnt taste and gummy icing. the red velvet was the best of the lot, but the icing tasted like they used gelatin, ruining that creamy cream cheese goodness. I took another bite ou of the yellow cake this morning thinking they couldn't be THAT BAD. Still bad. Really bad. I think there is lots of room for lots of good bakeries in this town, so I am sorry these guys aren't getting it right.
I live in Penn Quarter and was very happy to see a cupcake store opening here, even happier when I tasted the little cakes. The red velvet and chocolate espresso are especially delicious-very moist & flavorful, with fantastic icing. The hot chocolate is also delicious (although, too hot to drink for at least 5 minutes). The review by "bestbets" is bizarre-giving them 1 star based on the website?! (I also disagree with the description of the cakes as muffin-like, but decide for yourself.) I've met the owner/manager-he seems like a nice guy with a great little new business. I hope they're successful because I love their little cakes & hot chocolate.
