If you are looking for a hip setting to have a drink before/after dinner I would suggest this place. This alone was the only reason I gave a star. The food was, to be nice, terrible. The crab fritters were overpowered by Terragon, my $20 burger was cooked to an incorrect temperature and unispiring & my wife still has a stomach ache from the steak.
The other reviews I had read about Redwood warned that the food was not worth the visit and they are accurate. Service was good but a bit slow. I really like the interior and look of the restaurant. The biggest disappointment was the food. We started with the 5 cheese plate which was ok, very average. My fiance had the Seared Tuna salad which was "ok". I ordered the Cheeseburger, medium with cheddar and bacon. The Cheeseburger that was brought out was well done with the wrong cheese and everything on the plate was room temperature as if it had been sitting out for 10-15 min. They have big prices and disappointing food.
Most onliners who write restaurant reviews seem to be inspired by a particularly terrible or exceptional experience. We read the mixed reviews and decided to eat at Redwood this evening despite the lack of universal acclaim, and we were treated to a very tasty meal with solid service and an excellent, Euro/cafe-esque ambiance. We both had the beet salad, which was suberb. My wife had ravioli and I had a cheeseburger, and both were very tasty. All in all, a delightful evening, no pretense, decent service, and very tasty food. We will be back. Recommended.
Recently I had Saturday brunch with a friend at Redwood. Unlike the below reviews it was not that bad. Our food was very good. My friend had a grilled cheese with tomato soup and I had eggs, bacon and biscuit. I guess that would be hard to screw up. Service was mediocre. Our waiter would come and go. There was a screaming child at the table next to us which the staff and more importantly the parents did nothing about.
and for good reason. Reservation fibs from the hostess, disappearing waiters, out-of-stock wines (never a good sign as it suggests cash flow problems, but not necessarily damning as we're talking Monkey County DLC here), and the age old problem of having to protect your plate from the waiter/busboy while others are still eating. This place needs to reevaluate its operations, because mediocre food, premium prices, and rotten service are recipes for closure.
I went here recently with a group for a birthday celebration. Three orders came out wrong; mine, the $25 lobster burger and fries, came out ice cold. My burger was more filler than lobster, and the fries clearly were from a bag. My friends' salads looked like something you could have thrown together last-minute at home. They tasted so-so, too. If a restaurant is changing as much as Redwood is, I expect the meals to be good. Go elsewhere.
I have eaten at Redwood twice and both meals have been two of the best that I have had in the DC area. I am very sad to here that the Chef is gone because I thought his work was amazing. oh well.
