Editorial Review

The Taj Mahal restaurant claims to have introduced "traditional" Indian cooking to the Washington area in 1965. And this just-south-of-Dupont location is going strong – the crowds still come for the hot lunch buffet every afternoon.
Taj Mahal made its name doing "healthy vegetarian." Owner Shashi Chopra learned to cook from her vegetarian mother, and so the restaurant offers a decent choice of vegetarian dishes, although vegans should note most of the biryani dishes are cooked with meat, but not served with it. The Taj also makes a selling-point of its low-fat, low-cholesterol cooking techniques.
All this is very nice, but the food is uneven. Sometimes, as with the rogan josh or tandoori chicken, the spices are exciting. But on some visits the naan has been bland and almost undercooked, and or the meat was too dry. No exotic curries can hide such faults. But a smooth, delicious lassi (an Indian yogurt drink) might make it more enjoyable.

Bland and unexciting food :(!

To describe this food as bland is an understatement. The dishes that we tried were completely tasteless. Definitely not worth the relatively high price!
