The Mynabirds

Ain't that always the case -- it takes leaving the city for a D.C. artist to reach an artistic peak. Laura Burhenn was a staple in the D.C. music scene for many years, both as a balladeering solo artist and as one half of one-album wonder indie pop band Georgie James. Since relocating to Omaha, Neb., she's formed a new band, the Mynabirds and on the group's new album, "Generals," the smoky-voiced Burhenn has created a vibrant pop landscape. Sad that she left, but she's earned a happy homecoming. Black Cat 1811 14th St. NW, Washington, DC | 202-667-7960

Parade music from a piano? Classical tunes from 12 feet of metal tubing? How about a guitar that can speak different languages? For this five-concert series, the Conservatory is taking common instruments and showing kids how varied and wonderful they can be. The series kicks off with pianists Maribeth and Bradford Gowen performing picnic and parade music. Best for age 4 and older. Glen Echo Park 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD | 301-320-2770
