Cheryl Wassenaar

Cheryl Wassenaar is a visual artist, who explores the function of text in a hybrid practice of painting, sculpture, and design. She works primarily with found commercial signage, re-purposing discarded wood into visual metaphors of communication that borrow from the language of modernist painting and contemporary advertising. Her latest body of work uses sign-maker's vinyl for site-specific work, often collaborating with a writer or poet. Long View Gallery 1234 9th St. NW, Washington, DC | 202-232-4788

Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins

Our guess is Molly Ivins would be pleased: Kathleen Turner comes to Arena to take on the bravado, smarts and tough skin of the late Texas newspaper columnist. Ivins' was a highly regarded writer, who will come to life in this show, which weaves personal anecdotes with a look at politics. Watch out, D.C. The play runs through Oct. 28. For oenophiles looking for something grander than the usual tasting, Barrel Oak hosts this cool, formal, seated tasting with food pairings at the adjacent Oak Hill Estate, a historic home that, in the 18th and 19th centuries, belonged to Supreme Court chief justice John Marshall (it's the first time the home has been opened to the public).
