Cheryl Wassenaar

Cheryl Wassenaar is a visual artist, who explores the function of text in a hybrid practice of painting, sculpture, and design. She works primarily with found commercial signage, re-purposing discarded wood into visual metaphors of communication that borrow from the language of modernist painting and contemporary advertising. Her latest body of work uses sign-maker's vinyl for site-specific work, often collaborating with a writer or poet. Long View Gallery 1234 9th St. NW, Washington, DC | 202-232-4788

Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins

Our guess is Molly Ivins would be pleased: Kathleen Turner comes to Arena to take on the bravado, smarts and tough skin of the late Texas newspaper columnist. Ivins' was a highly regarded writer, who will come to life in this show, which weaves personal anecdotes with a look at politics. Watch out, D.C. The play runs through Oct. 28. Arena Stage at the Mead Center 1101 6th St. SW, Washington, DC | 202-488-3300
