You need not understand the rules of croquet to enjoy the 30th annual staging of the Annapolis Cup competition. Every year, squads from St. John's College and the U.S. Naval Academy gather to strike balls through hoops with wooden mallets while spectators crowd around in their Gatsby-era best to cheer, picnic, drink and toast to a bygone era of lawn parties and genteel sportsmanship. The grounds open at 8 a.m. and the match begins at 1 p.m. Important note: Unlike past years, St. John's has banned outside alcohol in 2012. Beer, wine and champagne will be available for sale on the grounds.
