Four years ago, Lauren and Kevin Russell started a cottage- furniture cottage-industry in their garage near Annapolis. The yummy-colored painted pieces from Russell & Mackenna caught on with shoppers looking for sophisticated, casual furniture for their bungalows and beach houses.

This year the couple opened their first retail store in Severna Park. They also introduced a way for shoppers to custom-order their four-poster beds, chunky dressers and scalloped coffee tables.

ýThe thing that makes our furniture so special is our frills and finials -- they are like the icing on the cake,ý says Lauren Russell, designer of the line of 56 pieces in 36 colors. ýNow you can mix and match any of the colors and components.ý

Imagine, for example, the possibilities of the Amelia Armoire shown here. Order the main piece in Key West Teal, pick the drawer configuration you like, add a wave-shaped pediment in Bermuda Beach pink and storage cubby boxes in sea-foam blue. Wow.

Another nice feature: The pieces are finished in commercial-grade lacquer paint that corresponds to the Sherwin-Williams retail line of colors, so you can buy paint to coordinate furniture with walls.
