Many of the films shown here come from the library's collection, and others are often related to an exhibit at the library. The screenings usually are part of a themed series, for example: nominees for the National Film Registry, tributes to Bob Hope or musicals from the 1970s and 1980s. There are obscure films, classics, cult favorites and witty juxtapositions on the schedule, too. Once, the library screened a double feature of the cliffhanger episode of "Dallas" that asked, "Who shot J.R.?" and "The Simpsons" episode that spoofed it, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"

The theater is on the third floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, across Independence Avenue from the main library building. Films are free, and reservations may be made by phone, beginning one week before any given show. Call weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Reserved tickets must be claimed at least 10 minutes before showtime, after which standbys will be admitted to unclaimed seats. Seating is limited to 64.
