Prince George's Little Theatre has lived happily for 20 years in the comfortable Prince George's Publick Playhouse, a state-of-the-art facility converted in 1977 from the art deco-era Cheverly Theatre, a former movie theater. Owned by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the playhouse is an attractive building that seats more than 300 people. While the old Cheverly was still showing feature films in 1960, residents of the neighboring town of Carrollton (since renamed New Carrollton), formed a little theater troupe called the Carrollton Players, which performed in schools, churches and meeting halls in the northern Prince George's County area. To appeal to a broader base of company and audience members, the troupe changed its name in 1962. Today, the company produces four shows a year, including comedies, mysteries, dramas and an annual Christmas production. The troupe has also produced occasional musicals.
Membership is $10 and includes a subscription to the troupe's newsletter, the Spotlight, and the opportunity to participate in theater activities.
