‘Corridor’ at the Art Museum of the Americas

The 12-artist showcase — featuring six from Baltimore and six from Washington — connects museum-goers to artists they might not otherwise know about.

"Raft," an all-black sculptural installation by Jeff Spaulding, features a heap of color-coordinated found objects collected by the Washington artist in an evocation of the famous 19th-century painting "The Raft of the Medusa" by Theodore Gericault. It suggests the flotsam of a consumption-crazed culture.

"Mariana" is a video by Brandon Morse. Evoking environmental pollution, a mysterious geologic eruption and the formation of arterial plaque, the dramatic yet enigmatic piece is typical of the Washington artist's work.

Do these pictures look familiar? In a series of images from Bernhard Hildebrandt's "L3" series (named for the manufacturer of whole-body security scanners, from which these shots have been appropriated), the Baltimore artist alludes to both the early photography of Eadweard Muybridge and the "Vitruvian Man" drawing of Leonardo da Vinci.

"Julia, La Costa Verde, Lima, Peru" comes from Susana Raab's "Cholita" series, which takes its name from a derogatory Peruvian slang term for a person of mixed race. The Washington-based artist herself has a Peruvian father and an American mother.

Washington artist Michael Platt creates evocative visual narratives by collaging such disparate poetic images as a naked woman and an urban landscape, a detail of which is seen here in his installation of hanging fabric panels, "Fallen Angels."

Utilizing the artist's signature beadwork, the doll-like "Casta Family," by Joyce J. Scott of Baltimore, makes reference to the racial mixing of 17th- and 18th-century Spanish colonials in Mexico.

"Saint for My City," by Oletha DeVane, is one of the artist's "spirit bottles," an African-themed series of figurines made from reclaimed and repurposed material that embody DeVane's hopes and prayers for her hometown of Baltimore.

The art of Baltimore sculptor John Ruppert is all about materiality. In the foreground, "River Jacks" is a series of boulders, one made by Mother Mature, in granite, the rest cast by the artist in various metals. In the background sits "Gourd," a large biomorphic form made from chain-link fencing.

"Store Losing," by Sofia Silva of Baltimore, is one of several evocative photographs of bleak urban landscapes, known in artspeak as "non-places."

Man and nature collide in Martha Jackson Jarvis's "Vegan's Table, Cry Me a River." The Washington artist's installation includes river stones, images of cows and butterflies and sheets of flat rubber that have been cut out to resemble streams of sticky black oil.

"Colony," by Washingtonian Phil Nesmith, is one of several works from the artist's "Flight Patterns" series. The image, which seems to show flies buzzing inside a jar, is not a photograph, but a photogram, created by placing objects directly on a sheet of photographic paper and exposing it to light.

"Gulf Distortions" is a suite of 12 photographs shot by the Baltimore artist Soledad Salame in the Venice and Grand Isle areas of Louisiana in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon blow-out. Printed with high-tech "interference pigments," they have the pearlescent shimmer of an oil slick. Like the environment they depict, the images themselves are also degraded, the result of Salame sending them to herself through a fax machine.
