"Data/Fields" includes installations by five contemporary multimedia artists. At left you can see the glowing screen of Mark Fell's "Tone Pattern Transactuality," a sound and light piece. Along the right wall is Caleb Coppock's "Graphite Sequencer."

A modified turntable is the centerpiece of Caleb Coppock's "Graphite Sequencer."

To experience Coppock's "Graphite Sequencer," you simply take down one of several platter-shaped drawings from the wall, plop it on the turntable and hit "play." Electrical contacts generate subtle sounds as the tone arm passes over the artist's pencil marks.

Mark Fell's "Tone Pattern Transactuality" consists of a simple, computer-generated image on a large screen (left). It changes color and intensity in sync with an abstract soundscape that ranges from a low hum to an insistent whine.

In Andy Graydon's "Untitled [band pass Arlington]," a thin band of light passes, like a scanner, over an irregular pile of construction rubble. In the darkened gallery, the rubble's contours are given stark, beautiful highlights.

Artist Ryoji Ikeda's "data.scan" is another artwork that incorporates sound and light. Data culled from star maps flash on a computer screen mounted in a console the size of a Pac-Man machine.

The images on the "data.scan" screen (seen here in a close-up detail) are numbers and other fragments of enigmatic information. But they form a kind of beautiful whole, in an abstract, sci-fi way.
