Lamont Bishop Gallery on Ninth Street NW is among the neighborhood's new trailblazers. The space, opened by two 20-somethings from Brooklyn, is intended to be a space that shows emerging artists -- many local -- and host events such as an upcoming pop-up shop, ArtJamz. November's opening, "Document the Fresh," was curated by Gerald Watson, who notes that before such a space, he was organizing art exhibits at bars and cafes.

The Dunes, an arts space in Columbia Heights, has hosted the storytellers of Speakeasy DC and Listen Local First, evangelists for area musicians. The destination also held an event with Readyset DC spotlighting local fashion designers and boutique owners, including Scott Parmar of Derringer Friday, which specializes in men's accessories and ties.

She dubbed the space Pleasant Plains Workshop, opened it to the public and began hosting art exhibitions by eclectic, talented artists, as well as poetry events and artist critiques. Bilonick, pictured, is also a crafter, screenprinting her own shirts and vintage ties. So it made sense that she also 'curates' her own rack of vintage clothes at Pleasant Plains. There are also books, zines and note cards for sale. In November, she will host a cheap-art sale timed to coincide with the holidays.
