Herb Silverman is founder and President Emeritus of the Secular Coalition for America, author of “Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt,” and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the College of Charleston.
It’s a clear violation of the First Amendment Establishment Clause for public school officials to encourage students to pray in class or to participate in prayer activities with students during class.
American Jews are fine with Jews who don’t believe in God, but are concerned and embarrassed by Jews who believe that God has a son.
Atheists are also sometimes viewed with suspicion, as if they are masking hidden values and questionable morals.
Those who educate and assist the needy got a good thing going, when theological doctrines don’t get in the way.
