The Ivymount School serves over 200 students with special needs, ages 4 through 21, from throughout the Washington, DC area. Named twice by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Ivymount has been providing educational programs and therapeutic services for students with disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, speech/language deficits, learning disabilities, and health impairments, for 50 years. Ivymount School includes The Multiple Learning Needs Program, the Model Asperger Program, and the Autism Program.
The Schools highly regarded educational and therapeutic programs utilize best practices to develop each students social, emotional and intellectual skills. Assistant Teachers and Assistant Teachers 1:1
for the 2013-2014 School Year
Ivymounts Multiple Learning Needs Program has openings in Lower, Middle and High School classrooms which serve students on both diploma and certificate tracks. Assistant teachers and 1:1s are valued members of a transdisciplinary team including head teachers, speech and occupational therapists, clinical social workers, and behavior specialists. Responsibilities include direct teaching and behavioral support to maximize each students learning and social development.
The Lower School (Multiple Learning Needs):
The Lower School provides an academic and functional life skills program. We utilize an integrated team approach, serving students aged 5-10. The program provides instruction using a multi-model approach, in small group, large group, or on an individual basis, designed to implement the IEP and academic program.
The Middle School (Multiple Learning Needs):
The Middle School serves students with autism, developmental, and multiple disabilities and provides an academic and functional life skills program. We utilize an integrated team approach to service our students. The program provides instruction using a multi-model approach, in small groups, large groups, or on an individual basis, designed to implement the IEP and academic program.
High School (Multiple Learning Needs):
The high school utilizes a functional life skills and career/vocational curriculum for its certificate track. We also offer a diploma track which is academically based. We utilize an integrated team approach serving 62 students, ages 14-18. The program provides instruction using a multi-modal approach, in small group, large group or on an individual basis, designed to implement the IEP and provide students with the tools necessary to live as independently as possible.
The 1:1 Assistant Teacher position entails direct teaching, preparation of teaching/behavioral materials, and is considered a valued member of the classroom team. All 1:1 staff must be able to pass all components of the physical management training offered by the school. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in a career in education or psychology.
Preference will be given to candidates with a BA in education, psychology, or related field. Experience with autism and special education desirable but not required.
