McKissack & McKissack, specializing in program & construction management, transportation, environmental engineering, architecture & interiors and planning & facilities management, is seeking an experienced civil/transportation engineer to join our growing Chicago office of roadway, highway, structural, rail and intermodal designers and construction inspectors as a Roadway/Highway Project Engineer.

This position will be within the roadway design division, and duties may include plan preparation, quantity calculations, geometrics, report writing, public involvement, drainage, traffic control sequencing, pavement marking/signing, roadway lighting, capacity analyses, traffic studies, traffic signals, construction details, specifications, cost estimates, quality control/quality assurance reviews and other related tasks. The individual may also be called on to assist other teams, such as structural engineering, transit, rail and construction engineering with various tasks and projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Planning, Construction Management or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of related, in-field experience, including work directly with or as a consultant to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation, Chicago Department of Transportation, local municipalities, Metra, Class I railroads or on other federally-funded projects
  • Strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment on multidisciplinary projects
  • Previous highway, drainage, construction inspection, track, traffic signal and/or lighting experience
  • Individuals with 5 or more years of experience will be expected to possess an Illinois PE, and individuals with less will be expected to show evidence of satisfactory progress towards obtaining one

Duties

  • Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks
  • Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and occasionally represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work
  • Receives instructions from the Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected
  • Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects
  • Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules and company standards
  • Researches design options and documents findings for the Senior Project Engineer
  • Maintains a project database by writing computer programs and entering and backing up data
  • Keeps the Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule, scope or additional services
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies
  • Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant to technical specialty
