Purpose: The After-School Education Intern supports Wesley Housing's educational programs for elementary school students. The After-School program is designed to help students achieve academic success.
Key Responsibilities: Works with assigned elementary students to provide direct assistance in one or more academic subjects; develops healthy learning relationships with students, assists students in developing a better understanding of in-class and homework assignments; coaches students in identifying resources to complete assignments; reviews completed assignments and suggests ways to improve assignments; employs strategies that motivate, encourage, and promote high performance in all students; and works with struggling learners through reading challenges. The After School Education Program Intern will play a critical role in strengthening reading and literacy skills and help children realize and attain their full academic potential.
Required Skills Must possess good oral and written communication skills, the ability and desire to work effectively with youth and resistant populations, skills in managing conflict and building teams, desire to learn how to lead or coordinate complex activities, and the ability to listen for a variety of purposes (support, information, etc.).
Qualifications: Must be an undergraduate or graduate student.
Length of Internship: 2013-2014 school year
Time Commitment: 20 hours per week, core operating hours are M - Fr between 2pm - 6pm
