The George Mason University, Office of Communications and Marketing invites applications for an Art Director position.
Responsibilities: The Art Director oversees the daily activities in Creative Services ensuring that the work deliverables produced by the various teams conform to the university brand and style; that teams have the appropriate guidance, feedback and resources to accomplish their work; and that all team members have an understanding of how their work contributes to the strategic goals of establishing and building the universityâ€™s brand profile. In addition, the person in this position is also a working designer contributing to the overall body of work. Reporting to the Director of Creative Services, the Art Director will also assist the Director of Creative Services on special projects.
Key Responsibilities: * Oversees and coordinates the daily operations of Creative Services ensuring teams are producing work that reflects and supports the universityâ€™s brand profile, and that projects are being delivered in an appropriate and timely manner and on budget; * Ensures all Creative Services deliverables meet or exceed expectations and achieve the communication objective of the client and university; * Serves as a working designer (both print and Web) contributing to the design work products of the office; * Leads the team by example, producing graphic design that builds, supports and establishes a George Mason University visual identity; * Works with the Creative Director on projects that support the work and personnel of Creative Services, and advances the goals in the Communications and Marketing Strategic Plan; * Serves on standing committees and workgroups or temporary project teams, and represents the interests of Creative Services and Communications and Marketing; and * Helps the university community understand the importance of the universityâ€™s brand profile, and how correct and consistent use of the universityâ€™s visual brand elements supports a strong brand.
Qualifications and Experience: * Undergraduate degree in the commercial/graphic arts field plus five or more years of experience; or 10 or more years of progressive work experience in a design firm, university creative services office, or advertising firm; * Excellent graphic design and marketing skills, creative problem-solving skills, and solid creative thinking/conceptualization abilities; * Advanced photo manipulation skills and an ability to art-direct a photo shoot; * Ability to work with a Web design and development team to ensure the brand and visual identity carry over into the universityâ€™s Web presence; * Ability to manage an in-house, full-service creative staff as well as freelancers; * Understands copyright laws as they relate to use of third-party resources; * Works in a Macintosh environment, and has expert knowledge of standard graphic software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat); * Strong working knowledge of modern printing processes and how they impact the various techniques employed in project preparation; * Experience working with a strong brand identity program; * Management experience including project management and supervisory experience; * Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills in both listening to the needs of clients and in communicating effectively with clients; * Ability to work effectively with a diverse audience; and * Experience in direct client communications and project management is desirable.
