TeenAIDS-PeerCorps (TA-PC) is one of the most respected AIDS prevention non-profits that specifically targets vulnerable teenagers in the U.S. and globally. Founded 20 years ago by a Harvard expert and lecturer, TA-PC is unique because the entire organization, from the top to its grassroots operations, is run by an all-volunteer staff with a passion for saving young lives 13 - 23. TeenAIDS is looking for dependable, serious-minded college-age volunteers to work part-time on a weekly basis that can fit study or work commitments:
We are looking to build an energetic and dedicated team of PR and marketing students to sell the mission of our charitable work to news media and professional writers. TeenAIDS has always been in the forefront of innovative ways to fight the spread of teen HIV and this story needs to be brought to the attention of broadcast (TV and radio), online (blogs) and print media (magazines and newspapers). A commitment of 12-14 hours per week is required depending on need.
Dr. Chittick is planning two overseas trips in 2014 (Africa in summer; Latin America in winter). You will be helping publicize these trips and arranging press contacts and interviews; TV reports, etc. You will research media outlets, arrange a PR campaign, disseminate press releases, talk to writers and editors personally to get them to publicize this unique Global AIDS Walk story.
You will be involved in social media campaigns (Indiegogo; Rocket Hub, Crowd Funding, etc.) to raise awareness and funds to train and educate overseas youth in our prevention techniques.
TeenAIDS is the first and only non-profit that is directly conducting HIV oral swab testing of youth on the streets. Using the new HIV home test kits, the Director and volunteers are taking the 20-minute tests to parks, beaches, sports venues, malls - wherever youth gather. This is important news that needs to reach reporters, news desks and pundits.
Another major task is contacting TV stations nationwide to carry our innovative PSAs (public service announcements). Our PSAs are entirely youth/student produced and acted and have won awards. They have been shown on MTV, VH2, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and a variety of other channels and shows. You need to have excellent people skills and be persistent. The PSAs are 30-seconds in length, similar in style to MTV music videos. Because the PSAs are a bit mysterious, eye-catching, and teen-oriented, they are popular with audiences and unique for TV. This job requires good record keeping, use of Excel spread sheets and determined follow through.
You will work directly with our Executive Director and learn his techniques. He writes excellent letters of recommendation that opens the doors to full-time employment.
