The Capital Area Food Bank feeds those who suffer from hunger and malnutrition in the Washington, DC metro area by acquiring and distributing food through our network of 700 partners. Our food distribution is complemented by outreach, education, and training to help those in need. The Capital Area Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, a national network of over 200 food banks.
About Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps:
The Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps (AHOC) is an AmeriCorps VISTA project, sponsored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Wal-Mart Foundation, and managed by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. The VISTA members work in both rural and urban areas across the country as part of a public-private partnership to improve access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamps) for Americans in need.
The Capital Area Food Bank, in partnership with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, is seeking a full-time VISTA member to enhance the outreach and effectiveness of healthy food promotions efforts in the greater Washington, DC region. The HFP AmeriCorps VISTA member will be instrumental in building the capacity of partners to more effectively communicate best practices for culturally competent health behaviors. The HFP VISTA's work will revolve around a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, among other educational spaces. The HFP VISTA will be pivotal to the development of a bilingual recipe card database, recipe testing and demoing, cooking classes, and healthy food trainings for our partner agencies.
This is a one year, full-time position beginning June 17, 2014. You are expected to be available for the needs of your community and project at all times, including days, nights and weekends. Because AmeriCorps VISTA service requires a full immersion in the project and community, both full and part-time employment are strictly prohibited - no exceptions - as well as adhere to some political and religious activities.
