Office of Marketing

Exempt, Regular, Full-Time, Pay Grade 3.4

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Director of Web and Graphic Design in the Office of Marketing.  Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Marketing Services, the Director, Web and Graphic Design, will be responsible for leading a team of web and graphic designers to develop consumer-facing web and collateral materials that support the department’s goals to build a compelling brand and motivate prospective students to enroll at UMUC.  Designers are responsible for designing web pages, landing pages, brochures, event materials, flyers, HTML email templates, social media messages, and other projects, as requested primarily by the Integrated Marketing team. 

The Director will be expected to continually build the competencies and contributions of the designers to ensure their skills and abilities remain cutting edge and reflect best practices.  The design team will be expected to work collaboratively with Integrated Marketing, the Production teams, and others in Marketing Services to ensure effective deliverables.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Serve as both lead designer and team manager
  • Manage and lead a team of designers to deliver excellent design work that helps achieve business objectives
  • Ensure understanding of requested work, importance to the organization and desired deliverables
  • Work collaboratively with Project Manager within Production team to plan print and web production needs
  • Work with assigned writers/editors to ensure that design and content align
  • Develop designs and solutions that are visually appealing, based on best practices, reinforce the brand value proposition and drive results
  • Become a valuable member of the Marketing Services leadership team and bring value-add thinking to all of our efforts
  • Continually develop the skills of each member of the design team to ensure each can deliver all desired outputs, quickly and at a high level of quality

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Graphic/Digital Design or related field
  • Outstanding print and digital portfolio readily available for review
  • 10 years professional experience in both print and digital design
  • Strong type and layout skills across a variety of platforms
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe CC, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Working knowledge of Adobe CC Flash, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and ActionScript
  • Adobe Edge and/or Digital Publishing Suite a plus
  • Experience designing websites, landing pages, and HTML e-mails A MUST
  • Experience designing, editing, and developing rich media banner ads A MUST
  • Understanding of interactive best practices, usability, mobile and responsive design
  • Experience conducting press checks and art directing photo shoots preferred
  • Experience with photo archive systems and metadata application a plus (Extensis Portfolio, Adobe Bridge)
  • Experience with social media a plus
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivated team player capable of multi-tasking
  • Maintains exceptional work quality in a fast-paced production environment
  • Good listener, collaborative, team-player
  • Proven leadership and ability to motivate direct reports to outstanding performance
  • Demonstrated management skills and commitment to enhancing skill development of direct reports
