Santa Barbara County, Calif., $25
Stolpman is one of my favorite Santa Barbara wineries, specializing in Rhone-style wines and getting better every year. La Cuadrilla is a special wine crafted by the full-time vineyard crew along with winemaker Sashi Moorman. It blends syrah, sangiovese, grenache and petite sirah into a heady red that will match any red meat from the grill. Alcohol by volume: 14.5 percent.

Available in Virginia at Vino Volo in Tysons Corner; on the list at Green Pig Bistro in Arlington.
New York, $19
I’m a sucker for unusual blends that don’t follow a classical paradigm. This blend of chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot blanc, vidal blanc, Riesling and Gewurztraminer is fruity and rich, excellent by itself or with seafood. ABV: 13 percent.
Siema: Available in the District at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits, DCanter, Glen’s Garden Market; on the list at Brasserie Beck, Founding Farmers, Sei. Available in Maryland at Adega Wine Cellars in Silver Spring, Hair o’ the Dog in Easton, Pinky & Pepe’s Grape Escape in Gaithersburg, Vino Volo in Bethesda; on the list at Cafe Nola in Frederick. Yet another example of an excellent pinot noir from Oregon’s fine 2012 vintage, this one that doesn’t stretch the budget. If you’re not convinced, try this, then move on to other wines. ABV: 13.4 percent.
Free Run: Available in the District at Ace Beverage, DCanter; on the list at Mio, Zentan. Available in Virginia at J. Emerson Fine Wines & Cheese in Richmond, Unwined (Alexandria, Belleview), Vino Market in Midlothian, Vinosity in Culpeper; on the list at Trummer’s on Main in Clifton.
Sudtirol-Alto Aldige, Italy, $12
This wine, made from the schiava grape, is not for those who favor dark and brooding wines, but adventurous palates will enjoy its bright cherry flavors, hints of smoke and earth and refreshing acidity. ABV: 12.5 percent.
Siema: Available in the District at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits, DCanter; on the list at Sonoma. Available in Maryland at Vino Volo in Bethesda. Available in Virginia at Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean, Grapes of Taste in Ladysmith, Little Washington Winery, Swiss Bakery in Springfield, Wine Cabinet in Reston, Unwined (Alexandria, Belleview).

Fruity and flowery with peach and jasmine, this is a delicious wine for chilling down on the patio while the coals are getting hot. ABV: 13.5 percent.
