Dave McIntyre’s recommended roses
By Dave McIntyre,
These are just a few of several roses on the market that are worth exploring. I will have more recommendations next week in my monthly Recession Busters list. Two things to remember: Don’t neglect the 2009 roses, which might have traded some freshness for a little complexity. And if you can’t find any of these wines, the widely available Parallele 45 2010 rose is an excellent alternative.
Domaine Thomas et Fils Terres Blanches 2010
Sancerre, France, $28
This pinot noir rose is pricey, but it is terrific. It displays an excellent balance of acidity and fruit, and yet the flavors keep unfolding and persevering on the palate. This would be an ideal wine for grilled salmon: Yes, pink wine with pink food.
Kacher: Available in the District at Connecticut Avenue Wine & Liquorn MacArthur Beverages; on the list at Bistro Francais, BlackSalt, Brasserie Beck, Darlington House, Dirty Martini, Poste, Marcel’s.
Domaine Bunan Mas de la Rouviere 2010
Bandol, France, $22
It’s vibrant, with electric acidity and lively strawberry fruit. If you have time to pay attention while swigging it down, it shows great finesse as well.
M Touton Selection: Available in the District at Cairo Wine & Liquor, Circle Wine & Liquor, Connecticut Avenue Wine & Liquor, Cork & Fork, Paul’s of Chevy Chase, Rodman’s, Schneider’s of Capitol Hill, Sherry’s Fine Wine & Spirits. Available in Maryland at Cork & Fork in Bethesda, Dawson’s Liquors in Severna Park, Old Farm Liquors in Frederick, Silesia Liquors in Fort Washington. Available in Virginia at Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean (formerly Cecile’s Wine Cellar), Le Tastevin and Rick’s Wine & Gourmet in Alexandria, various Wegmans locations.
Mas des Bressades 2010
**1 / 2
Costieres de Nimes, France, $14
This isn’t the cheapest of Robert Kacher’s line of roses this year, but it is showing the strongest, with lively fruit and acidity and a long, dry finish. A blend of grenache, syrah and cinsault.
Kacher: Available in the District at Ace Beverage, MacArthur Beverages, Morris Miller Wine & Liquor, Rodman’s, Sheffield Wine & Liquor Shoppe. Available in Maryland at Eastern Liquors in Middle River.
Miguel Torres Santa Digna Rose 2010
Central Valley, Chile, $11
Delightful. It’s worth buying by the case, or at least several bottles to enjoy throughout the summer. Strawberry and cherry flavors, with a great backbone of acidity to give it life and good posture.
Elite: Available in the District at Rodman’s, Yes! Organic Market. Available in Maryland at the Bottle Shop in Potomac, Graul’s Wine & Spirits in Baltimore. Available in Virginia at Euro Market and Twisted Vines in Arlington, Leesburg Vintner, Unwined in Alexandria; on the list at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse in Vienna.
Alexander Valley Vineyards Dry Rose of Sangiovese 2010
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, Calif., $12
This wine, from sangiovese grapes grown expressly for rose, has been one of my favorites for the past few summers. It is deep cherry red in color; fruit forward in flavor, yet dry on the finish. Effusive and fun.
Bacchus: Available in the District at Burka’s Wine & Liquor, Calvert Woodley, Circle Wine & Liquor, Harry’s Reserve Fine Wine & Spirits, Magruder’s, Paul’s of Chevy Chase, Rodman’s, Whole Foods Market Tenleytown, Zola Wine & Kitchen; on the list at I Ricchi, Morrison Clark Inn, Notti Bianche. Available in Maryland at Calvert Discount Liquors in Cockeysville, DiWine Spirits in Pikesville, Dunkirk Wine & Spirits, Port of Call Liquors in Solomans, Port Tack Wine & Spirits in Arnold, the Village Shoppe in St. Michaels, Vineyards Elite in Pikesville, Wells Discount Liquors in Baltimore.
Chateau Bellevue la Foret 2010
Fronton, France, $11
A typical southwestern France blend of negrette, gamay and syrah, this rose is appealingly juicy while still showing the minerality and finesse of a French rose.
Wine Traditions: Available in the District at Whole Foods Market P Street; on the list at Bistro La Bonne. Available in Maryland at Finewine.com in Gaithersburg. Available in Virginia at Arrowine and Whole Foods Market in Arlington; Chain Bridge Cellars (formerly Cecile’s Wine Cellar) in McLean; Rick’s Wine and Gourmet in Alexandria.
