These five sangiovese-based wines offer exceptional value compared withmore well-known Tuscan reds.

Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano 2010

Tuscany, Italy, $23

It’s fresh and juicy, but also structured with fine tannins. There’s cherry, herbs and cool minerality on the finish. Wonderfully food-friendly, especially with hard-to-pair tomato-based sauces.

Mantellassi Poggio Etrusco Morellino di Scansano 2010

Tuscany, Italy, $18

Dark, rich and toastier than the usual Morellino, this has long finishing notes of chocolate.

Mantellassi Il Cannetto Maremma IGT 2010

Tuscany, Italy, $9

Made in the same area as Morellino di Scansano, this wine is earthy, leathery, spicy, wild and an exceptional value.

Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso 2009

Umbria, Italy, $22

The sangiovese is blended here with 15 percent Canaiolo (a Tuscan grape) and 15 percent sagrantino. Medium-bodied with silky tannins, with floral and cherry notes.

Colpetrone Montefalco Rosso 2010

Umbria, Italy, $20

You’ll taste berries and spicy, gamy notes. Rich, full-bodied with big tannins. Blended with 15 percent sagrantino and 15 percent merlot.
