The red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards typically stands as the first fashion exhibition of note of the event-packed awards season. Garments seen during the spring/summer runway shows in New York, Paris and Milan enter the fray, and trends start to emerge that will shape the sartorial landscape for the next few months.
Three noteworthy fashion trends emerged Sunday night as a sea of celebrities roamed past reporters and into the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
#1 Taupe/nude/light pink shades
Heidi Klum, Piper Perabo and Cate Blanchett were a few of many female stars (at least 16 by our count) to select a gowns in this muted color palette. A striking contrast from the emerald green that dominated last year’s ceremony, the subdued tone might be part of the more austere philosophy that seemed to characterize the night, as Style writer Katherine Boyle noted.
# 2 Headbands
Headbands and haute couture aren’t a traditional pair — unless on a set for “Gossip Girl” — but a handful of starlets ran with the look Sunday night. Charlize Theron’s jeweled band sparkled along with her Dior Couture dress and Cartier jewelry, which the actress told E! was on loan from a Geneva museum.
# 3 Mermaid tail
The form-fitted mermaid-tail silhouette was a popular choice for Sunday night’s show. Julianne Moore, Tina Fey and Reese Witherspoon all wore gowns with curve-hugging bodices and flared trains, although Sofia Vergara and Paula Patton had two of the more eye-catching numbers of the evening.
