2013 Pantone color of the year: Emerald green

What’s the right color for an economy that’s hopefully on the mend? Emerald green, of course. Conjuring up gems, dollar bills and the sparkling Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz,” green is the color of “rejuvenation,” the Pantone Institute’s Leatrice Eiseman says, “something that talks of new life.” We found 11 items to bring that feeling into your home.

Green connotes “balance and harmony and clarity,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. An eight-drawer green statement piece could be just the thing to bring order to a kid’s room. $1,499, www.roomandboard.com.

Eiseman says that, while sophisticated, green is “also a color that is in tune with some of our more traditional thinking about color, for example a rugby shirt that’s navy blue and green.” For a home, Lilly Pulitzer’s Totally Trellis Crewel Rug would be the preppy equivalent. $328, www.garnethill.com.

If you already have some green in a room, don’t be afraid to keep it and add emerald. “Different shades of the same color are more complimentary than we think,” says D.C. designer Sally Steponkus.
