Carlotta Coates wants a unified space in her Silver Spring basement, but columns in the middle of the room are making it difficult. The Coateses are looking for a family room with a space for entertainment and exercise equipment.
Designer Christopher Patrick uses the columns as a framework for the entertainment area and creates a workout nook with paint and foam floor tiles.
A fretwork screen is used as a faux wall and an anchor for the sectional. Paint the screen yellow, such as Benjamin Moore’s Golden Thread.
Accordion-style sconces, mounted to two columns, are functional and add a hint of color.
For a natural element, two petrified wood stumps serve as side tables.
A horizontal stripe pattern helps distinguish the exercise space. Use a light blue, such as Benjamin Moore’s Porcelain Glaze.
Replace the existing white flooring with cozy dark wood tiles.
Foam floor tiles in black complement the dark tones of the new flooring and further differentiate the exercise area.
Paint the walls a neutral beige, such as Benjamin Moore’s Paper Doll.
