House Calls: A shared bedroom in Rockville

THE CHALLENGE

Rose Stahr’s daughters, Violet, 3, and Lucy, 20 months, share a bedroom in Rockville. Stahr is planning to switch Lucy from a crib to a bed and wants help updating the space. The color scheme should complement a pair of colorful quilts she made the girls for Christmas.

House Calls: Local rooms get virtual design makeovers: The Washington Post pairs local readers’ design challenges with an interior designer. The result is a before and after makeover with tips and tricks for making the most out of the space.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Katie Moore incorporated green, yellow and pink accents to match the quilts and provided separate yet flexible sleeping areas for each girl.

Moore, of Olios Design (202-412-6255), is based in Alexandria.

Invest in furniture that can grow with the child. A toddler bed is functional and safe and can be used for years to come.

Optimize storage. An upholstered toy box can hold books and toys and provide extra seating if necessary.

Sharing a room isn’t always easy. Define each girl’s half with hanging letters and monogrammed pillows.

Coordinate a color scheme. A pair of matching lamps ties the two sides of the room together.

A small area rug softens the room. White faux sheepskin is simple yet girly.

Sky blue can be a neutral, too. The walls are painted Crystal Springs by Benjamin Moore.

Take advantage of the room’s height. Tall bookcases (not shown) minimize clutter.
