THE CHALLENGE

Rockville resident Leonora Nyawata wants to remake her 16-by-20-foot living room as a formal space for guests that can also serve as a comfortable escape from the television for her family. She’d like to highlight the view out to her garden and needs furniture that accommodates an allergy-prone son.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas chooses soft colors and sophisticated accessories to create a space that works for both formal and day-to-day use.

Red ottomans and side tables with red accents add a bit of color and pair well with an earth-toned palette.

Choose a new couch with polyester fabric, which collects less dust and repels allergens.

Make the view out to the garden the focal point by positioning the sofa to face the window.

Streamline the transition into the space by placing a console table behind the couch.

Paint the walls a warm beige, which adds warmth and complements the darker furniture. Try Sherwin-Williams Pavillion Beige.
