House Calls: Petite playroom becomes bedroom

Arlington resident Dana Galvin wants to give her 8-year-old daughter, Zoe, her own room, but she’s worried their small playroom won’t accommodate her. THE CHALLENGE

Arlington resident Dana Galvin wants to give her 8-year-old daughter, Zoe, her own room, but she’s worried their small playroom won’t accommodate her. Dana would like Zoe to have space for a desk, dresser and toy storage, and to occasionally accommodate a friend for a sleepover. Zoe loves horses and hates anything too girly.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Jana Bek uses a loft bed and wall shelving to optimize space while incorporating Zoe’s color and theme preferences for a cozy, functional room.

A loft bed fulfills needs for storage and a play area in a small space.

In absence of a bedside table, a clamp lamp is a fun, affordable alternative to sconces.

Easily replaced and affordable accessories, such as pillows and art, incorporate Zoe’s love of horses.

When space is limited, go taller, not wider. A narrow dresser (in foreground, not shown) keeps the room uncluttered.

To free up floor space for storage bins, use floating shelves by the new desk.

Brighten the space and coordinate with the new decor by painting the space a warm white. Try Sherwin Williams’s Pearly White.
