THE CHALLENGE

Sam Chiron and his girlfriend, Jessica McCreight, want to rearrange and revamp the living room of their one-bedroom D.C. apartment to make more room to entertain guests.

THE SOLUTION

Designer Sheryl Scruggs’s plan for a repositioned couch and wall-mounted shelves gives the couple the space they want for socializing.

Stain the existing dining table a shade of espresso for a modern look.

A n arc lamp above the dining table can set a mood for an intimate dinner party.

Floating shelves hold books and accessories while freeing up floor space.

Reposition a new couch to streamline the living room and dining space.

To save more space, use a short stool to serve as both seating and a side table.

Rich wall colors (Benjamin Moore’s Shenandoah Taupe and grayish-blue Cloudy Sky) add contrast to the new light-colored rug.

Scruggs, of Bronze Interiors (202-362-1013, www.bronzeinteriorsdc.com), is based in Washington.
