Crazy chemistry at the Maryland Science Center

MARYLAND SCIENCE CENTER - “Elephant Toothpaste” explodes out of its soapy sphere at the Maryland Science Center’s Summer of Irresponsible Science.

KidsPost would NEVER encourage our readers to experiment with exploding dry ice, to try to melt action figures with solar-powered beams or to launch water balloons with slingshots.

Instead, we’re letting the Maryland Science Center do it for us! The jaw-dropping, hands-on museum in Baltimore has launched its Summer of Irresponsible Science with experiments and demonstrations daily in which Science Ninjas will pop up to baffle you with their biology and confound you with their chemistry. Rumor has it that on some days researchers will toss objects off the roof of the three-story building in the Inner Harbor. All in the name of science, of course.

So, here comes the part where we tell readers’ parents (because we know you don’t actually care about this part) that the Science Center assures us that all the experiments, while wacky, are completely safe.

When: Daily through August. Summer museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Where: Maryland Science Center, 601 Light St., Baltimore

Cost: Admission starts at $11.95 for kids and $14.95 for adults.
