Dogs get fit, calm on treadmills

Grant Hindsley/AP - Chryses, a Belgian Malinois in Los Angeles, can “stay” and “come” at the same time.

Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from the movie “The Artist,” puts in his time on the treadmill.

Uggie, who’s 10, doesn’t do a heavy workout, just a light trot and a walk on a treadmill made just for dogs, said owner-trainer Omar Von Muller.

(Grant Hindsley/AP) - Pit bull Trixie, 3, tries out an aquatic treadmill meant for dogs in need of lower-impact exercise.

But dog treadmills aren’t just for pampered Hollywood pooches. Three million dogs used them in 2010, the American Pet Products Association reported.

Although they are pricey — $475 to $40,000 — the machines might pay off big in one situation: preparing shelter dogs for adoption.

Dog trainer April Suhr of Las Vegas, Nevada, says it’s easy for a dog in a shelter to go cage crazy.

“They bark. They won’t eat,” she said. Suhr used a pet store’s treadmill with rescue dog Max. The results were all positive.

“Not only did he calm down, but he was using the treadmill one day when a woman came in, saw him, fell in love with him and adopted him.”
