German church built of snow, a replica of one built in 1911, can hold 200 people

PETR JOSEK/REUTERS - This snow church is likely to become a tourist attraction — until spring comes.

You might think that you’ve built some pretty awesome snow forts and snow tunnels, although not yet this winter.

But we’re pretty certain that any snow creation you’ve constructed isn’t nearly as elaborate as a 65-foot-long church built entirely from snow and ice that opened last month in the German town of Mitterfirmiansreut.

The church is a replica of one from 1911. That one was built because the town didn’t have a church and the townspeople had to walk 90 minutes to the closest one. In protest, they built a snow church so they could worship closer to home.

The new church is made from 49,000 cubic feet of snow and can seat 200 people.

But there’s one problem with the structure. We bet that if you think for a second before reading the next paragraph, you’ll be able to figure it out.

It will melt when spring comes.
