A team from Kendall Demonstration Elementary School in Washington won the Battle of the Books competition held May 3-5 at Gallaudet University.
The competition, which encourages reading among deaf and hard-of-hearing middle schoolers from across the country, assigns books that students read independently and then discuss with teammates. During the contest, the teams score points by answering questions about the books’ characters, events and themes.
The Kendall team — eighth-graders Eliyas Assefa, Jennida Willoughby and Zhencheng Chen — was in the division for the highest-level readers. After making it through preliminary and playoff rounds in January, the top eight teams met in Washington this month for round-robin matches. Kendall went head to head with Earle B. Wood Middle School from Rockville in the championship match. Kendall won the match by a single point.
The team also won the sportsmanship award, and Jennida and Eliyas won individual awards.
