Kids divided on penny’s future

When KidsPost published a story this month about the possibility that the United States would stop producing the penny, we offered readers “a penny for your thoughts” on the subject. Based on the response, we should have gone to the bank to buy several rolls of pennies! Here are just a few of the letters we received from kids on both sides of the issue.

I think that the government should stop making pennies and make nickels out of the same material that they currently make pennies from (mostly zinc) since it now costs 10 cents to make a nickel. That way, making nickels would be profitable.

I think the government should stop minting the penny. It is produced at a loss to the government. In fact, the government should also remedy the nickel by reducing its thickness and by changing the metal that nickels are made of.

I think that the United States should get rid of the penny because it costs more than it’s worth and we’ve gotten rid of a coin before. In the past, there was a coin called the half penny, but we got rid of those. The penny is a useless coin.

Heads (Keep the penny)

I think the United States should keep the penny because I really like to collect smooshed pennies. I wouldn’t be able to collect them if there were no more pennies . . . so keep the penny!

Tovar Stein, 8 ,

I vote to keep the “Lin-coin” in circulation. Marking up everything to round off prices will psychologically make everyone feel they’re paying more, when everything is already so expensive. Besides, “a nickel for your thoughts” just doesn’t sound right and, most important, we won’t have “lucky penny” days anymore!

— Sidharth Muralidhar, 13,

We should not get rid of pennies, as five pennies cost the same as one nickel to mint. As stores are likely to round prices up without pennies, things will get expensive, hurting the poor and middle class.

I think we should keep the penny because it has one of our presidents on it and with him on the penny it’s a little reminder of how he helped make our lives a better place.

— Olivia Anderson, 9,

I think they should keep pennies because people don’t care about pennies and they drop them so I can pick them up. :)

— Marc Sipher, 9,

Getting rid of the penny makes no “cents.” First of all, many charities depend on penny drives. Getting rid of the penny would cause them to get less money. Also if you get rid of it, you would have to get rid of the nickel too, causing sales taxes and prices to go up. The U.S. should keep the penny.
