Book lovers, we have an opportunity for you (not an assignment!). We bet that you’ve read a book that changed the way you felt about something. Maybe it made you want to see a far-away country. Maybe it gave you courage or sympathy for others.
If so, the D.C. Public Library and the Library of Congress would like to hear your story. They are sponsoring a contest for rising fifth- and sixth-graders called “A Book That Shaped Me.”
Kids who write a one-page essay about a book that affected their lives might win a prize. The essays will be judged not only on content and creativity but also on spelling and grammar.
Entries must be delivered in person to a D.C. Public Library branch and include a form found at
www.loc.gov/bookfest/kids-teachers/booksthatshape.html
. The deadline is August 25.
A winner at each library will receive a $50 gift card, and three grand-prize winners will receive a $200 gift card. Winners will be honored September 23 at the National Book Festival on the Mall.
