Lost, blind and cold, dog reunited with family

Imagine being blind, alone and lost in temperatures that dipped 40 degrees below zero.

Your chances of making it home safe and sound would be pretty slim, but that’s just what Abby, an 8-year-old brown and white mixed-breed dog managed to do last month.

Abby went missing in a snowstorm in her Fairbanks, Alaska, neighborhood on December 13. The Grapengeter family never expected to see the pet they had rescued from a shelter as a puppy again.

But a week later Abby showed up 10 miles from home on the front porch of a veterinarian, who brought her inside and checked her out. “No frozen ears, no frozen toes,” reported Dr. Mark May, who added that Abby is “no worse for wear but had quite an adventure.”

“It’s a miracle; there’s no other words to describe it,” said McKenzie Grapengeter, who has three children: Ava, 6; Shane, 9 and Greg, 10. She called Abby's safe return “the most amazing Christmas gift we could ever ask for.”
