The kids at Kimball Elementary School in Southeast Washington sure know how to recycle.
And for being so green, they earned some green — as in $1,000.
The school was the Washington winner of the first nationwide “Recycle-Bowl” competition held by Keep America Beautiful, a group that encourages education and improving the environment in communities.
The idea was to get kids in elementary, middle and high schools to recycle as much paper, plastic, aluminum and other material as possible.
From October 17 through November 12, 2011, 1,226 schools nationwide kept track of the pounds of material they recycled.
In all, more than 2 million pounds of recyclables were collected. On average, every child who participated collected 5.3 pounds of trash.
If that sounds impressive, consider this: The average Kimball kid — and there are 309 students at the school — collected 16 pounds. For their accomplishment, they were given a check for $1,000 to be used for the school.
The winning school in Maryland was Westlake High School in Waldorf and the winning school in Virginia was Willard Model Elementary School in Norfolk.
