When: Through March, indoor animal exhibits are open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parking opens at 8:30 a.m.
Where: The zoo is located at 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW.
Cost: It’s free to enter the zoo, although you do have to pay to park at a zoo lot.
What to do: In addition to just checking out the animals, there are lots of free daily programs at the zoo. Meet a kiwi, watch an octopus being fed or see gorillas and orangutans do some problem-solving. Check out the zoo’s program guide before you go. It’s online at nationalzoo.si.edu/
Visit/DailyPrograms/default.cfm.
Good to know: If it’s sleeting or icy, fewer animals will be outside. That’s because their safety comes first. Slipping on ice can cause serious injuries to even very hardy animals. But even on a cold day, the indoor areas of the zoo — especially Amazonia, the Think Tank and the Bird House — offer great ways to experience the animals.
