Built between 1737 and 1742 by Jonathan Chapman and son Nathaniel, the mill (now also known as Beverley Mill) was once a beacon of industrialization. Then came the Civil War. Archaeologist Kay McCarron says Jonathan Chapman’s great-great-grandson John Chapman was used as a hostage on trains when the Union controlled the nearby tracks.The mill continued operating under various owners into the 1950s.
